2020.04.26 05:33 Maiqswaterwalking Top 1000 Japanese Words (Kanji + Romaji + English)

I was tired of coming across impenetrable lists of words or websites that prevented copying so I extracted the top thousand words according to one source and formatted them to easily be input into Quizlet. I took out all unnecessary indicators (such as colloquial, since it would be pointless to actually have to type the word colloquial in quizlet), although I can provide a file with those markers if desired. This is to create the simplest base for flashcards possible. If putting into Quizlet, simply select as many as desired and indicate the colon symbol (:) as a tab in order to separate terms front and back and the cards will be automatically made. Hope this helps you guys.

2019.12.21 01:25 af-fx-tion K-Pop Monthly Makestar Roundup - December 2019 & January 2020 (incl. Rainbow, AWEEK, BT21, & Apink Chorong)

Happy Holidays everyone!
The last 2019 Makestar roundup is upon us. There's some good projects this cycle, so let's take a look.
Currently Active Projects: (in order based on project end date - given in KST)
RAINBOW 10th Anniversary Project (Pre-Order)
Who is Rainbow?
So Rainbow's had a bit of a resurgence this year, but are still kind of unknown overall - so I'll do a quick summery.
Rainbow is a 7 member group that was created by DSP Media (home to KARD and APRIL, and former home of KARA and Fin.K.L). Expectations were high prior to the group's debut since they would be the first girl group to debut after KARA, who had just taken Asia by storm with the "Mister" butt dance.
The group debuted in November 2009, with the song "Gossip Girl". The group's strongest era, popularity wise, was during 2010-2011, with songs like "A" and "To Me" peaking in the top 10 on the Gaon singles charts. "To Me" is actually their highest charting song on the charts, peaking at #5.
However, mismanagement and internal issues at DSP (2011 was around the time members of KARA sued DSP for contract termination) caused the group to lose their momentum and their fandom sharply declined, though their singles continued to chart decently well until 2015.
The group's final single before disbandment was "Whoo", which was released in February 2016. The group would officially disband in October 2016, due to the members' contracts expiring. Since disbandment, the members have pursued various solo projects, but have stayed connected and have reunited annually to celebrate the group's debut anniversary.
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the group's debut, Jaekyung decided to spearhead (and fund!) a reunion single to thank Rain-nous (the group's fandom) for continuing to support them. Partnering with DSP, the group released their anniversary single "Aurora" on November 14, 2019 - 10 years to the day of the group's anniversary (i.e. their first ever music show performance on Music Core).
This project is for a photobook celebrating the group's 10 year anniversary. Proceeds from both this photobook and the anniversary single are going to be donated to charity (aimed toward helping children in need).

"Happy 300th Day Peng-Love You♥" Metro Ads
Who is Pengsoo?
Pengsoo is a 10 year old penguin who appears on the YouTube channel Giant PengTV, which is run by Educational Broadcasting System in South Korea.
A sassy, snarky penguin, Pengsoo is currently a "trainee" at EBS, and dreams to be a global idol superstar.
Unexpectedly, Pengsoo blew up in popularity across Korea - to the point where he's even doing M2 K-Pop relay dances.
Pengsoo's official YouTube channel, Giant PengTV, currently has over 1 million subscribers.
The creator of this project is a huge fan of the character (hence the username name Peng-Ryan) and wanted to celebrate Pengsoo's 300 days since debut with Metro ads across Korea.

[Art Book] "THE UNTAMED" Original Specials: Specials Set Group Purchase (Pre-Order)
What is The Untamed?
The Untamed is a 2018 Chinese drama based on the 2018 BL novel written by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. The drama stars stars UNIQ's Wang Yibo and X Nine's Xiao Zhan in the title roles.
This listing is for an International Group Order for the show's official Art Book.
According to Wikipedia, the drama's plot is as follows:
The jianghu world is ruled by the powerful Wen sect, which dominates over the smaller Lan, Jiang, Nie and Jin sect. The carefree Wei Wuxian becomes fast friends with the righteous Lan Wangji, and during their adventures, the pair find out that the head of the Wen sect is the evil mastermind behind a series of plots that would wreak havoc upon the lands.
Wei Wuxian's attempts to protect the innocent members of the Wen sect from unfair persecution leads to disaster, and he goes missing in the process. Wei Wuxian reappears sixteen years later, and works together with Lan Wangji to solve a series of murder mysteries, eventually finding and defeating the true culprit.
Due to China's current censorship laws against LGBTQ+ content, the more overt BL aspects of the novel are removed, though there is very heavy subtext that remains that conveys the BL aspects of the story adequately given the production's constraints.
The show, which is currently in pre-production for its 3rd season, began airing in 2018, and took China by storm. In the past year, the show has earned ~98 million Yuan (~$14 million USD) in revenue via fan meetings, concerts, streaming platforms, album sales and merchandise.
While the novel is not officially available in English, the show was officially picked up by Netflix, and is also available on Viki. Netflix is the only service that has the episodes without the burned in Chinese subtitles.
You can check out the show's wikipedia page) for more info.

AlphaBAT Album Project
Who is AlphaBAT?
Alphabat has, to put it mildly, had a weird career trajectory since their debut. The group currently consists of five members and is currently signed to APB Entertainment (which might also go under W Entertainment?).
The group's name is a play on the English word "alphabet", and in a cool nod to its' Greek origins (alphabētos), the members' stage names are the names of the Greek letters in the alphabet.
The group's fanname is Alpha, due to it being the name of the first letter in the Greek alphabet.
The group officially debuted as a nine member group (Beta, Code, Delta, Epsilon, Fie, Gamma, Heta, Iota, Jeta) on November 14, 2013 with the song "AB City" and accompanying album of the same name.
However, in 2016 the group's SNS announced that group was leaving Korean label Simtong Entertainment and moving to Japanese label Jakol Corporation. This move caused the group to lose 5 members (Code, Delta, Fie, Iota, Jeta). The remaining four members added a fifth member (Kappa) to complete the new lineup under Jakol.
The group promoted as four members on and off due to enlistment throughout 2017, though reconvened as five members in 2018.
Sometime in 2017, the group moved labels again to W Entertainment/APB Entertainment, which is where they currently are.
The group's last comeback was "Fly" in September 2019, which was released as a digital single. This project is for their upcoming comeback, and first without member Epsilon due to enlistment.
Also, member Heta is kind of in a weird spot, he enlisted in 2017, but I haven't been able to find out whether he left the group or not since his enlistment should be done this year. I'm assuming he did, but if anyone knows anything more, please let me know!
You can check out the group's various SNS pages by clicking here.

GsA Single Album Project
Who is GsA?
GsA, previously known as Girls' Alert, is a five member group signed to ROOTS Entertainment. The group's fandom name is Weather.
The group debuted in May 2017 with the song "Dreamgirls". After another "cute concept" single, the group rebranded by changing their English name to GsA and adding new member Narin to replace GyeoUl, who decided to leave the group in December 2018
Now going a "girl crush" concept, the group released "We Got The Power," their first single with the new lineup in August 2019.
This project is for their upcoming 4th digital single, though Makestar donators will get an exclusive physical copy of the single.
Some interesting facts about the members:
The group has various SNS pages, which you can find by clicking here.

Big Marvel Single Album Project
Who is Big Marvel?
Big Marvel is a Youtubesoloist signed to Chicken Day.
According to his bio on Makestar:
In less than a year since launching the YouTube channel ‘Big Marvel’, he has surpassed 1 million subscribers and currently has more than 7 million subscribers.
The channel mainly includes covers of pop genres, NCS, K-POP, etc., and various sound source videos using a $1 instrument, cat piano, flute, electronic calculator, glasses, etc. with his distinct non-existent facial expression!
He's also won a few awards for his content, including winning a award at the Beatbox KR Championship in 2012and winning the "Unconventional Awards" at VidCon in 2019, being the first Korean Youtuber to receive Ruby Button.
He released his first official single as a soloist on December 13, 2018 - an english song called "Twilight" feat. Ysabelle.
This project is for his follow up song, which will be his first single album.
You can check out his YouTube channel by clicking here.

AWEEK NEW Album Project
Who is AWEEK?
AWEEK is a seven member boy group signed to Illusion Entertainment in Korea and OneWorld Entertainment in Japan. the group's name comes from “A week goes by quickly, however, a week is repeated."
To go with this theme, every member represents a day of the week:
Originally a six member group, the group went through a minor lineup change during their pre-debut activities in Japan prior to the group's official debut in 2019.
The group officially debuted on January 31, 2019 with the song "The More I See". Shortly after, original member Ilkwon left the group. The group would gain the additions of members Jinyu and Logan - bringing the lineup to seven.
Their most recent comeback (and first as seven) was in November 2019 with the mini album The Birth of Seven, accompanied by the song "Breathe".

2019.11.17 03:18 af-fx-tion K-Pop Monthly Makestar Roundup - November & December 2019 (incl. Favorite, KNK, Seventeen, BTS, and April)

Happy November everyone!
We've got some good projects coming up, so let's dive in.
Currently Active Projects: (in order based on project end date - given in KST)
E.O.S Album Project
Who is E.O.S?
E.O.S (which stands for Excuse Our Survival) was a three member techno-rock band that debuted in 1993, with Kim Hyung Joong as an original member (and leader) of the group. The group was active from 1993 to 1997, when they disbanded after the release of their third album Neo Myth of EOS. After the group disbanded, Hyung Joong sort of disappeared from the industry, making the occasional guest feature on various tracks until the reception of “Good Person” on Toy’s 2001 project album convinced him to officially come back and debut as a solo artist. He officially debuted as a solo artist in 2003.
After a successful Makestarfor their 25th Anniversary album (where they raised 186.13% above their goal), it seems that the group has decided to continue promoting as an active group. They ran a second Makestar which was similarly successful.
Although the other two original members Go Sukyoung and Kangrin are not involved, they have been replaced by Bae YoungJoon (on base) and Cho Samhee (guitar). Their credits include being a former member of 90s group Kona (Bae Youngjoon) and being bandmaster for Epik High (Cho Samhee).
ASTRO 6th EP Pre-Order
Who is Astro?
Y'all know Astro, so you can check out more about them via their wikipedia page). This project is simply a pre-order for the group's new album, and Makestar notes that sales will count for Hanteo, Gaon, and Music Bank. They are are holding a "lucky box" event with Astro merch for those who pre-order the album from their site.
Paradise Single Album Project
Who is Paradise?
Paradise is a four member male group signed to HL Company.
The group markets themselves as the "first popera (pop+opera) idol group".
They debuted in April 2017 with the song "Paradise". There was no MV (at least not one I could find), but you can watch their live performance of the song (taken a few month after their debut) here.
Their most recent comeback was in December 2017 with the song "Again".
After a bit of a promo hiatus (they did a mini concert in 2018 but not much else), they began appearing on the first season of Vocal Play.
Some of their notable performances include:
Their YouTube channel gets updated pretty frequently, so check them out!

The group debuted on July 4, 2017 with the song “Party Time”. Prior to their debut, the group did pre-debut promotions under the name Astory Girls.
The members also auditioned for YG's MIXNINE, though Junghee, Soyeon, and Ahra making it past the audition rounds. Junghee was eliminated in episode 8, and Ahra placed 21st and Soyeon placed 26th in the finals.
Junghee's most notable performance was as part of Team Girlfriend performing S.E.S' "I'm Your Girl", Junghee's was on Team Rising performing "Dangerous Girl", and Soyeon's was on Team Good Night performing "After this Night".
Member Ahra also participated on the final season of Kpopstar, where she made it to the semi-finals before getting eliminated. Her most notable performance was with another Mix Nine contestant Lee Soomin, performing Jessie J's "Bang Bang".
The group's most recent comeback in Korea was in January with the mini-album Loca, which was also the name of the accompanying title track. The group made their Japanese debut on November 6, 2019 with the single album Catch Me and accompanying title track of the same name.
This project is in support of their Japanese promotions.

APRIL Season's Greetings Project
Who is April?
April is pretty well known on the sub, especially due previous member Sawori (the iljin queen). You can check out more about the group on their wikipedia page.) Also check out their most recent comeback "Oh! My Mistake".
AlphaBAT Album Project
Who is AlphaBAT?
Alphabat has, to put it mildly, a weird career trajectory since their debut.

2019.04.15 21:26 sidaeinjae "A Guide to Cinephilia" - 140 Films every aspiring cinephile should experience, a list curated by Jung Sung-Il

Jung Sung-il is probably South Korea's most prominent film critic, and his contributions laid grounds for the cinephile culture of the whole country. struttinwithsomebbq posted Jung's 29 films of the 21st Century, and while we're at it, I thought it would be nice to introduce another list curated by him.

"A Guide to Cinephilia" is a piece of writing posted on Korean Film Archive's web magazine in 2016, written by Jung. It consists of an introductory note, recommendations of film theory books, a short summary of film history, and this list; 140 films every aspiring (Korean) cinephile should watch, organized in subgroups and with brief notes (which I'll desperately try to translate as best as possible).
It's a pretty intimidating list, but I think it's worth it to be aware that there are so many classical/foreign films for us to enjoy. Anyway, here goes:

0. Introduction
Lest we forget and to avoid easy misconception, it must be made clear that this is strictly an introductory guide for those who wish to introduce themselves to cinephilia; to enter its very first gates. It is not for: first, the scholars and academics whose main focus is film theory. Second, aspirant filmmakers attempting to direct their first film. They should be out on the streets with their cameras, not in front of their monitors. Third, those who are already conversant and have surpassed this phase quite a while ago. Beginners only, I tell you!
Delving into a newfound interest is invariably challenging. Classical music, for instance. Who would have imagined that there were so many recordings for the same piece? Even if you have managed to be acquainted with the classics, that makes no difference when you're getting into another genre, say hard bop; once again, back to the drawing board. What should one begin with when they wish to learn about literature? Well, it would certainly be ill-advised to purchase the whole Puffin Classics catalog. Likewise, introducing yourself with Plato is not the proper approach for a newcomer to philosophy. It is a necessary milestone, although inappropriate for commencement.
In these situations, the best course of action is simple: start, fail, and repeat, while one's taste slowly develops in the process. Sadly, this takes too much time. Therefore I have compiled a list- not only to save your time but also to ease you into the rich world of cinephilia. Of course, my real desire is for you to both go through and rebel against this list, ultimately creating your personal canon. It is at that stage, dear reader, that you will no longer consider yourself a mere novice. Until then, keep this list by your side. Someday when you have completed this guide, I can imagine yourself laugh joyously and proclaim, "Now I will write my own list." I wish to view your list.

1. Three Films to Start With
The three films presented to us when we take our first steps toward cinephilia. The three films we vehemently deny and disregard as we grow into pubescent cinephiles. The three films we ever so often pride upon ourselves by declaring these are not the masterpieces of Orson Welles, Jean Renoir, and Jean-Luc Godard. And the three films we eventually return to and duly accept, these were indeed the three films one should start with on their journey.

2. Three Alternatives to 1.
Even after our acceptance of the above three films, one might still be hesitant or a tad rebellious. With a twinge of embarrassment, if one desperately wishes to provide an alternative, I suggest that this is probably the least you can do; while saving face as a cinephile, of course.

3. Ten Silent Era Classics
Now we're a bit ashamed that there isn't a single silent film on the list, aren't we? These are the ten essential films we often disregard as "classics", but make us realize and admire that film is an incredibly modern medium. The films that make us wonder about cinema once again. If you're through this stage, start reading books about film.

4. Three Greatest Hollywood Films
We're on the edge of cinematic classicism, and now these three films may make you cry out: Is this truly the utmost of cinema's capabilities? These films are a must-watch, not just for us cinephiles- but for anyone who deems oneself a worthy member of the human race.

5. Three Cult Hollywood Films
These might not be classics, but for some, they might be.

6. Ten Hollywood Films, the 70s
The filmmakers who grew watching 4 & 5 tried to replicate their roles, but as we go through these films, we realize that classics are classics for a reason. Lamentable films of the 70s. Post-classicism.

7. Ten Famous Hollywood Classics
Films which connect 5 & 6. A bit too famous for their own good, perhaps? Really difficult and sad to choose, since there are so many persuasive alternatives.

8. Three European Films Just Before World War II
I wished to track back for a bit and search for the equivalent of Hollywood Classicism in Europe but failed to do so, due to World War II. Three pitiable classics, just before fascism swept through Europe.

9. Ten European Films Just After World War II
Ten films after the war & before Nouvelle Vague (French New Wave). The films cinephiles of the previous generation were fanatical about. Some might hold up, some might not, and some might return to you like a long-lost friend.

10. Ten European Films, the 60s
Focused on Nouvelle Vague films of the 60s. Films one simply doesn't just watch, but start looking for clues and explanations in film books. Please do not give up! These films from the first cinephiles will make your heart beat with excitement and elation. Films you might not connect on intellectually, but emotionally.

11. Ten European Films, the 70s
70s European modernism. Some might love, some might wish to return to the classics above. I won't blame you for skipping this section.

12. Ten Asian Classics
Korean cinema aside, the ten Asian films one must watch. A bit regrettable that most are Japanese films, but I digress.

13. Ten Sinosphere Films After the 80s
They're close to us (Korea), but they're also the strongest films outside the US after the 80s: China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Ten films from the region. Must-watches, for they will be quoted and mentioned in so many books and criticisms. But beware: some are just the director's most famous (not necessarily their best) work, but still a good starting point nevertheless.

14. Ten Masterpieces Over Four Hours
They won't be easy to watch again, but one must endure through these at least once. Fearsome films which might change your outlook on cinema forever. Two kinds of reactions are expected; you might just be proud of the fact that you've seen it, or you proclaim it as one of the best films of your life. Long.

15. Ten Famous Films of the 20th Century
Quite famous films which haven't been mentioned before but it would be sad to omit them.

16. Fifteen Korean Films Before the 90s
The perks of being a Korean cinephile! The utmost essentials for a cinephile living in Korea. Chosen among films before Hong Sang-soo's The Day a Pig Fell into the Well, because films after it haven't stood against the test of time just yet.

17. Ten Films to Start With: The 21st Century
We can experience touches of the 21st century with these ten films, which may not be the paramount masterpieces of the era but with which one can sense an emergence of something rather new, as if a new century of cinema has begun. A rambling list of films with dissimilar trends, but you've probably heard of them at least once.

And that's the whole damn thing!

2018.11.16 16:18 A108_net Gopashtami: The Cowherds’ day

November 14, 2018 at 08:14PM https://www.a108.net/blogs/entry/25923-gopashtami-the-cowherds%E2%80%99-day/ Gopashtami: The Cowherds’ day Vrindavan, 15.11.015 Gopashtami falls on 16th November this year. It is the celebration of the first time that the lad Krishna is allowed to take the cows out to graze instead of just the calves. His Mother bathes and dresses Him and makes all sorts of auspicious arrangements so that His big day will be a success. She decorates and cleans the floor of the house and waves lights around the boy to protect Him. She makes sure His big brother and the other boys will be with Him and all the mothers concerned pack up delicious lunches for them to take to the forest. Of course, for her, His actual leaving with the cows is very painful for she can not bear to let Him out of her sight even for a moment. When He returns she attends to all His comforts and listens to all the tales of His adventures, asking every detail .Then she hugs Him and gently puts to sleep Her boy who says that His feet hurt and that He is so hungry that He can not eat~ yet He is anxious to go off again the next morning. These padas of the Ashta Chaap poets express the great beauty of the love of Krishna’s Mother Yashoda and of the sweet youthful reciprocation of the same - as well as the deepness of the separation she feels when He is away all day. Raga Devagandhara prathama gocharana ko dina aja pratahkala utha jasoda maiyya kino kai saba gaja gavata gita manohara bani taja gurujana ki laja larika sakala sanga sankarsana venu bajaya rasala age dhenu cale govinda prabhu nama dharyo gopala Translation: Today is the first occasion on which Gopal will take the cows to graze. Getting up early in the morning, mother Yashoda starts to make all the preparations. Many kinds of musical instruments are playing, proclaiming the occasion, while the cowherds begin to sing in sweet voices forgetting their shyness of their elders. Then, together with all the boys and His brother Balaram, leading the cows, Govindadas’s Lord begins to play a sweet melody on His flute and is known from this day on as Gopal, protector of the cows. O, Our Sri Krishna Who lives by the Sri Govardhan Peak: we cannot live without You […chorus] Beloved young prince of Vraja. Please show us Your beautiful Face with Your sweet grin, for our eyes are squirming like a fish without water and a single second passes as slowly as an aeon. [1] The Vraja Lad plays His flute in a scale of seven notes. He ties those lovely notes in with tones of loving mood and the song is very very sweet. [2] This Sri Krishna, Who appreciates the fine mood of Pure Love, climbs up on the Sri Giriraji Peak and calls out loudly to the cows with a very sweet voice full of affection.. "Come Gaanga, come here Dhumari!" [3] "O, my Lord, since the day I first saw You nothing else interests me. I cannot sleep at night and I have forgotten all about eating and drinking." [4] "O, Sweet Lad! my eyes burn for a chance to see You and my ears long to hear Yur voice. My heart craves to meet You, for You are my very life and breath." [5] "My sweet Love, when I see Your Full-Moon– like Face my heart and soul are pulled towards it just as the lily and the chakora bird respectfully wait to taste the Nectar of Your Form. [6]" "O, Dear Krishna, my mind wishes to keep You within my eyes. I wish to continuously and without any interruption behold Your Gorgeous Form as the Supreme Dancer." [7] "Dear Lad,I have given up caring about how the world or my family will judge me. My love for You grows as a lotus bud in the sun." [8] "Millions of Cupids surrender to Your cheeky way of walking! And Your large Lotus-eyes have captured the heart of the young Ladies of Vraja." [9] "O, enchanting Krishna, Protector of the cows and Ocean of Joy! You play in the forest bowers. I am the sweet fragrant Malati flower in Sri Vrindavan and You are the King Bee looking for enjoyment!." [10] "Darling Boy, I sing this over and over again like the calling of the Chataka bird or the peacock. Please, You are the Son of Nanda, like a fresh new cloud, please shower me with the rain of Your love!." [11] "Please let me enjoy this joyous residence near You on the Sri Govardhan Mountain for ever and ever." The poet Chaturabhjadas bows down in surrender to the Beautiful Sri Krishna, Upholder of the Sri Giriraji Mountain. [12] 82 Raga Purvi age gaya pachem gaya ita gaya uta gaya govinda ko gayana maim vasavoi bhavai gayan ke sanga dhave gayana mem sacuvave gayana ki khura renu anga lapatavai gayana som vrajachavo vaikunthahu visarayo gayana ke heta kara giri le uthavai chita svami giradhari vitthalesa vapudhari gvariya ko bhekha dharem gayana mem avai There are cows in front of Him, cows behind Him and cows here and there. Sri Krishna the Protector of the cows loves to be surrounded by them. He runs with them and gains great pleasure thereby; He even rubs the dust of their hooves on His body. He has filled His Land of Vraja with so many cows that even Vaikuntha is forgotten. It was for the sake of the cows that He held up the Sri Giriraji Mountain. The poet Chitasavami, believing Sri Krishna the Upholder of the Govardhan Hill and Sri Vitthaleshji to be one, says "Look at the Lord; He is dressed as a cowherd boy and is returning to Vraja with the cows." 83
